COBOSTORIES' LEARNING PROCESS

When you work with Cobostories and other teaching tools from Copenhagen Bombay Learning, the work is always based on working with a creative, iterative process, which we call the CoboStories learning process:

The model supports an approach to teaching which is based on the creative, iterative model developed at Aarhus University by Ole Sejer Iversen and his team. We have since adapted the theory and created a model that fits Copenhagen Bombay Learning’s tools and methods.

For every story we ask the children to tell, there must be a clear educational purpose, and it must mean something. This can be described in the process by considering the following 4 elements:

EXPLORE

Do

• Research the problem we would like to solve. Talk about it.

• Research what story we want to tell?

• Define which subject we are working with?

• Set boundaries for the project?

ASK

• What kind of problem is it that we want to solve?

• What story do we want to tell?

• Why?

• What do we know about the topic?

• What do we not know about the topic?

LEARN

• Cooperation

• Discussion

• Innovation

• Problem solving

• Creativity

METHODS

• Look into

• Brainstorm

• Planning

• Research

• Collection of information

INVENT

Do

• Decide how you will make the product

• Find out who the recipient is?

• Discuss what the characters do?

• Try out the techniques you want to use?

• Discuss what we don't know?

• Talk about what you need to learn?

ASK

• Who is the recipient of the film or book?

• What is the purpose of the story?

• What should we learn from history?

• How will we tell the story?

• What techniques should we use?

• Concept development

• Storyboards

• Prototypes

CREATE

Do

• Create the content for the film

• Find or draw backgrounds

• Create effects as needed

• Damage your grades

• What should they look like?

• How do they sound?

ASK

• What is the beginning, middle and end of the story?

• Who is the hero?

• Who is the villain?

• Does the hero have a helper?

• Are we able to do the things we want?

• What scenes should we shoot?

PRESENTATION

Do

• Show your films to each other

• Read your books to each other

• Present your product to the class and have the others rate it according to criteria such as:

• Giving "stars" or "hearts"

• Award Oscars for the best: sound, video, animation or story...

ASK

• What did we learn from the project?

• What else could we have done?

• Did we make any mistakes along the way?

• Why not?

• Does it matter how we work?

• What was the best movie or book?

What is the CoboStories learning process?

We believe that creating stop-motion animation and digital books is an excellent learning opportunity.
To help you make better use of this, we've built the CoboStories learning process, which helps ensure that when you use Cobostories, you also take advantage of all the chances to learn that come from doing so.

The model is based on 21st century learning skills, specifically the 4 "C's": Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration & Communication. Or in Danish: Critical thinking, Creativity, Collaboration and Communication.

To this we have added classic design thinking. A circular, iterative process where you work in 4 phases: Explore, Invent, Create & Present.

These four steps all have descriptions and clues on how to implement them that are built into the Cobostory learning process poster.

It will be easy for you to point to learning outcomes of every Cobostories movie or book you make with your children – whether they are in kindergarten or school or anywhere else.

The model is a tool

- for you to work with every day!

The process increases awareness of what you are doing in each phase and how you move between them – and why they are important to the outcome. In the time frame where you move between stages, there are opportunities to have smaller and again circular iterations. Why is that, you might ask? Because for every task you do, there is a chance that you can be inspired and you can get new ideas.

The model points out with the circular movements that you must be aware that the process is constantly moving and changing, and that is ok. You just have to be aware of it and use it to your advantage. It helps to create awareness of the process and to train the students to work in a flow. Once your students get used to working this way, it will quickly become second nature to them.

How do I use it?

Every story you want to tell using the model must be told in the same way.

The stages show where you are currently in the process. For each step in the process, you can use the poster to find questions to ask, tasks to complete, or things to work on.

The poster guides you through each step of the process as you navigate students through the creative process and help them create their own stories.

With the Cobostories poster and a dash of creativity, you have everything you need to plan your approach to how to work creatively with ease!

What theories is it based on?

We base our assumptions on 21st century learning skills as described here:

http://info.21skills.dk/ (Danish)
or here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/21st_century_skills (and be sure to follow each link for more knowledge!)

Our design thinking model is loosely based on the model developed by Aarhus University: "Designcircle" by CAVI We are also inspired by thoughts about peer assessment and collaboration.
